Managing a move can be a daunting task. Figuring out what goes with you and what goes to Goodwill, all while working as a full-time parent or employee overwhelms even the most disciplined individuals! Not to mention, it is ten times harder to manage while you are in the process of purchasing a home. The last thing you need to worry about is how all your belongings get from Point A to Point B! If you are moving soon, keep reading for a few tips to maximize your efficiency while minimizing your stress.

1. Invest In Quality Moving Boxes

When my boyfriend and I left college, we approached moving day a little differently. He went to the store and purchased the cheapest cardboard boxes available. Meanwhile, I invested in hard-plastic containers to store my belongings. Weeks later, we unpacked to discover that most of his belongings had been destroyed by little critters that ate through the boxes in his garage. On the other hand, my reusable containers kept all my belongings clean and critter-free! Although it is a little more expensive, I encourage you to invest in reusable moving boxes! Not only do they keep your belongings safe, but you can reuse them in the future.

2. Sort & Label!

The easiest way to stay organized is by sorting your items into categories and labeling every single box! The last thing you want on move-in day is to open a box full of shoes in your kitchen. Making sure every box is organized and labeled correctly makes your move-in day exponentially quicker and easier. Rather than putting every box in the garage and waiting to sort them by room, you can easily take the boxes to the room where they belong. If you are worried about labeling a reusable plastic container, here is an easy hack: use packing tape. Put a strip of clear packing tape on the lid and write the label with a sharpie. That way, once you have unpacked, you can easily remove the tape/label and reuse the container for something else!

3. Avoid Re-packing Clothes

One of the biggest mistakes people make when moving is taking everything out of their dresser and closet to put them in a box. Don’t fall for that mistake! It will only make your life harder on move-in day. If you store clothes in your dresser, leave them there. There’s no point in packing them in a box, only to unpack them and put them back in the dresser. You can pull out the individual drawers to carry. Also, keep your hanging clothes on the hanger. An easy way to make sure they don’t get ruined during your move is by placing them in a new trash bag and tying the strings at the top of the hanger. Then when it comes time to put them in your new closet, all you have to do is untie the trash bag (and you can reuse them so they don’t go to waste). As a side note, if you have some clothes that you don’t need, you can make an extra buck by taking them to a secondhand clothing store that will buy your on-brand clothing. You can take any remaining items to the thrift store.

With these three easy tips, your next move should be a breeze! As long as you invest in quality containers, label, and leave your clothes as-is, you will be squared away in your new home in no time!
